Mark Cowan, J.D.
Professor Cowan has received several awards for teaching, including the inaugural College of Business and Economics Distinguished Teaching Professorship (2019) and the Boise State Foundation Scholar Award for teaching (2011). In 2024, he was named a Boise State Distinguished Professor, the university's highest honor for faculty members. He serves as director of the Master of Science in Accountancy, Taxation (MSAT) program and the JD/MSAT Concurrent Degree program offered in partnership with the University of Idaho College of Law. Professor Cowan is also the Chair of the Gem State Tax Symposium, a continuing education seminar for tax practitioners held at Boise State each June. He co-hosts (with Prof. JoAnn Wood) the "Journeys of Accountancy" podcast, in which accountants are interviewed about their career experiences and the recordings are shared with students taking introductory accounting courses at Boise State.
Professor Cowan conducts both legal academic and practitioner research. His research interests include the taxation of nonprofits, tax issues in Indian Country, and multistate tax issues. He has also written and presented about mental health issues in the accounting profession. Professor Cowan has published articles in the American Business Law Journal, The Tax Lawyer, the Idaho Law Review, the Florida Tax Review, the Pittsburgh Tax Review, the Journal of College and University Law, The Tax Adviser, The CPA Journal, the Journal of Accountancy, The ATA Journal of Legal Tax Research, and the Journal of Taxation. In 2019, he launched "The Call of the Classroom," a column on teaching taxation that appears periodically in Tax Notes.
